Walking to Upopoy
Upopoy is about a ten-minute walk (about 500m) from the North Exit of JR Shiraoi Station. Stay alert for traffic and vehicles near crosswalks and the entrance to Upopoy

Driving to Upopoy
Follow road signs for Upopoy to get from Route 36 or Route 86 to Parking 1 along the route indicated by the red arrows in the diagram above. To ensure the smooth flow of traffic, please enter the parking lot by turning left.Turning right into the parking lot is not possible during peak traffic periods.
Visitors may be directed to Parking 2, located about 0.5 km from the Upopoy, in order to ease congestion or when Parking 1 is full during busy periods. Please follow the directions provided by our staff.

- Entry to Parking 1 is available from 8:30am until one hour before Upopoy closes.
- Vehicles that exceed a height of 2 m, length of 5 m, width of 1.9 m and/or weight of 2 t should use coach parking.
- Visitors with disabilities and one caregiver may park one vehicle free of charge. Please present your disability certificate or similar documentation at reception to receive a voucher. Please note that this does not include coach parking

Things to enjoy near Upopoy

Noboribetsu
Noboribetsu Onsen has been a popular hot spring destination for countless visitors since the Edo period (1603-1867). Its collection of nine different types of hot springs, known as “nupur-pet” in Ainu, meaning “muddy white or dark-colored river,” makes it unique among Hokkaido’s hot spring resorts. Many of the hot springs originate from Jigokudani, formed by volcanic activity 10,000 years ago. Jigokudani means Hell Valley. It is a great place to stroll since the valley belches steam year-round.

Lake Toya
Lake Toya was formed by a massive eruption 110,000 years ago. It is at the heart of the Toyako Usu UNESCO World Geopark. Lake Toya, derived from the Ainu word “to ya” meaning “lakeshore.” The Mt. Usu Ropeway gives a breathtaking view from the top of the active volcano. Visitors can also explore walking paths and hiking trails and experience being in harmony with the changing earth. Activities around the lake include sightseeing boats, canoeing, horseback riding, and fruit picking.
